If you’re ready to create a pitch-perfect vibe for your business, Sonos Pro can help you get there — and sooner than you might think. A Sonos Pro subscription comes with everything your business needs to sound great, even if your existing sound system isn’t outfitted with Sonos wireless speakers.

You can make virtually any sound system Sonos-compatible in just a few steps. If you don’t have Sonos wireless speakers, or if your system mixes and matches Sonos speakers with wired audio equipment, you’ll need to add Sonos Port to connect all of your components. Once you’re set up, you can easily expand your sound system by adding new Sonos hardware.

Does Sonos Pro work with a non-Sonos sound system?

Sonos Pro requires a Sonos-compatible system to work, but this is easier to achieve than you might think. It certainly does not require replacing all of your existing speakers and audio equipment with Sonos hardware. All you’ll need is a system that can be connected with the Sonos app.

There are a few ways to make your sound system Sonos-compatible.

You can, of course, connect Sonos wireless speakers to the Sonos app directly over WiFi. If you have multiple Sonos speakers or components, you can create a system by grouping them all together in the app.

You can also connect a non-Sonos amplifier or receiver to the Sonos app via Port, a device that allows you to seamlessly incorporate wired speakers into your Sonos system. For business owners who want to get started with Sonos Pro right away but lack existing Sonos hardware, this is an easy and cost-effective option.

Is Port the only Sonos device I need to set up Sonos Pro?

In most cases, yes. Port connects directly to the wired amplifier or receiver that powers your existing sound system. Once you’ve connected Port, you can create a new Sonos system over WiFi and — boom — you’re ready to get started with Sonos Pro.

One caveat: Port cannot power audio equipment on its own. This shouldn’t be a problem if you’re connecting Port to your existing sound system, which should already include a powered amp or receiver. But if you’re creating a system and only have passive speakers, such as in-wall or in-ceiling speakers, you’ll need Sonos Amp instead.

Amp basically works the same way as Port, but, as an amplifier, it can power your audio equipment.

How to make your existing sound system compatible with Sonos Pro

In this step-by-step guide, we’ll assume that you already have existing speakers and hardware that fit your retail situation. If you don’t, you can get in touch with a Sonos expert by phone or chat. We can help you select the wireless speakers and hardware you need to set up a Sonos system in your retail store.

1. Connect Sonos Port to your existing audio equipment

Port is the easiest way to connect your hardwired audio components to a Sonos system. If you need help with installation, you can get help from a Sonos professional near you.

If you have multiple business locations, you’ll need a separate Port for each business location. This allows you to connect your local speakers to Port via a wired connection. Then, once you’re set up with Sonos Pro, you’ll be able to remotely manage and monitor all of your locations from a single dashboard.

Alternatively, you can create a Sonos system with a wireless speaker such as Sonos Five or Era 100. These options will sound great on their own or paired with other Sonos speakers, but they won’t connect to your existing hardware.

2. Subscribe to a Sonos Pro plan

You’re now ready to get started with Sonos Pro. We designed Sonos Pro to scale with your business. With two subscription options to choose from, you can focus on improving your customer experience and boosting productivity or fine-tuning your brand across a wide range of locations.

  • Sonos Pro Essential ($35/month per location) includes everything you need to get started, from ad-free commercially licensed music by independent artists to priority support whenever you need it. Other features include scheduled and automated playlists, volume limits, admin and access control, and the ability to curate your own approved music library.
  • Sonos Pro Premium ($70/month per location) takes the brand experience to the next level. It includes everything you get with Essential, plus hundreds of stations with commercially licensed music by the top artists you know and love.

It takes just a minute to set up your account and get started with Sonos Pro. Once you’re connected, you’ll be ready to stream and manage the music at all of your business locations from a single dashboard.

3. Add Sonos wireless speakers to your system over time

Now that you’re set up with Sonos Pro, you can add new Sonos speakers to your system as your business grows and needs evolve. It’s easy to add new Sonos hardware to your system via the Sonos app for iOS or Android. In fact, it’s the same way you initially set up Port — simply go to the Settings menu, and select + Add Speaker or Component.

This flexibility may prove especially useful as you expand your business to new stores or locations. With our speaker options for businesses, you can pick out Sonos products that fit the specific layout and requirements of your new locations.
